About the Author - Anton Chekhov
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian playwright and short-story writer considered one of the greatest writers in world literature. Born in Taganrog, Russia, Chekhov was also a practicing physician. He wrote hundreds of short stories and several acclaimed plays including "The Seagull," "Uncle Vanya," "Three Sisters," and "The Cherry Orchard."
Chekhov is known for his mastery of the short story form and his innovative dramatic technique. His works often focus on the Russian middle class and explore themes of social change, human nature, and the absurdities of daily life. "The Proposal" is a one-act farce that satirizes the Russian landed gentry and their preoccupation with property and social status. Written in 1888-1889, it showcases Chekhov's talent for comedy and his keen observation of human foibles. The play demonstrates how trivial matters can escalate into major conflicts when pride and stubbornness dominate.
Setting: The drawing room of Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov's country house in Russia, 19th century.
The Proposal Attempt: Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov, a 35-year-old hypochondriac landowner, arrives at his neighbor Chubukov's house dressed in formal evening wear. He has come to propose marriage to Chubukov's 25-year-old daughter, Natalya Stepanovna.
Chubukov is initially suspicious but becomes delighted when Lomov reveals his intention to propose. However, Chubukov leaves to fetch Natalya without telling Lomov he has permission to propose, leading to Lomov's nervous hesitation.
The First Argument - Oxen Meadows: Before Lomov can propose, a casual conversation about their estates leads to a heated argument. Natalya claims that the Oxen Meadows (a piece of land between their properties) belong to her family, while Lomov insists they're his. Both cite family history and become increasingly agitated. The argument escalates with both hurling insults at each other's families.
Lomov, who suffers from heart palpitations and other ailments, becomes so worked up that he storms out. After he leaves, Chubukov reveals to Natalya that Lomov had come to propose. Natalya is shocked and immediately wants him back, forgetting all about the meadows dispute.
Lomov Returns: Chubukov brings Lomov back. Natalya now tries to be pleasant and even concedes about the meadows. However, another argument erupts—this time about whose hunting dog is better: Lomov's Guess or Natalya's Squeezer.
The Second Argument - Dogs: What starts as a comparison of their dogs' qualities degenerates into another fierce quarrel. Both claim their dog is superior, citing various qualities and defects. Chubukov joins in, siding with his daughter and insulting Lomov's dog. The argument becomes so intense that Lomov's health deteriorates—he experiences numbness, palpitations, and nearly faints.
The "Proposal": In his distressed state, Lomov suddenly blurts out his proposal to Natalya. She immediately accepts. Chubukov, relieved, blesses them and calls for champagne. However, even after the engagement, the couple continues arguing about their dogs. The play ends with Lomov and Natalya shouting at each other while Chubukov desperately calls for champagne, suggesting that their married life will be equally quarrelsome.
