Train Ticket Cancellation Charges & Refund Guide
Planning to cancel your Indian Railway train ticket? Understanding the train ticket cancellation charges and IRCTC cancellation rules can save you from losing money. This complete guide covers refund rules for all ticket types — use our railway refund calculator below to get instant estimates.
1 Confirmed Ticket Cancellation Charges
When you cancel a confirmed train ticket, the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel before the scheduled departure. Indian Railways uses a time-slab system to determine the cancellation fee.
AC First Class (1AC) Cancellation Charges
| Time Before Departure | Flat/Percentage Charge | Amount Deducted (per ticket) | Refund Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| More than 48 Hours | Flat Fee | ₹240 + GST | High Refund |
| 48 Hours to 12 Hours | 25% of Fare | 25% Deducted | Partial Refund |
| 12 Hours to 4 Hours | 50% of Fare | 50% Deducted | Partial Refund |
| Less than 4 Hours / After Departure | No Refund | ₹0 Returned | No Refund |
Cancellation Charges by Class — All Classes
| Class | Flat Charge (> 48 hrs) | 48–12 hrs | 12–4 hrs | < 4 hrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1AC (First AC) | ₹240 | 25% | 50% | No Refund |
| 2AC (Second AC) | ₹200 | 25% | 50% | No Refund |
| 3AC (Third AC) | ₹180 | 25% | 50% | No Refund |
| SL (Sleeper) | ₹120 | 25% | 50% | No Refund |
| CC (Chair Car) | ₹60 | 25% | 50% | No Refund |
Minimum Cancellation Fee Rule
The flat charge (e.g., ₹240 for 1AC) is the minimum cancellation fee. If 25% of your fare is lower than the flat charge, the flat charge applies for the >48 hrs slab too. GST is applicable on service charges separately.
2 RAC & Waitlist Ticket Cancellation
RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) and Waitlisted tickets have different — and generally more passenger-friendly — cancellation rules.
| Ticket Type | When Cancelled | Charge | Refund |
|---|---|---|---|
| RAC Ticket | Up to 30 min before departure | Only Clerkage Charge (~₹60) | Full Fare Refund |
| Waitlisted Ticket | Before chart preparation | Only Clerkage Charge (~₹60) | Full Fare Refund |
| Waitlisted (Auto-cancelled) | Chart prepared & still WL | Clerkage Only | Auto-refund credited |
| RAC Ticket (not cancelled) | No-show after departure | No Refund | ₹0 |
Auto-Refund for Waitlisted Tickets
If your waitlisted ticket does not get confirmed after chart preparation, the refund is automatically credited to your payment source within 3–5 business days. No manual cancellation is needed for online (IRCTC) bookings.
3 Tatkal Ticket Cancellation Rules
Tatkal tickets have very strict cancellation rules. The Indian Railways does not provide a refund on cancelled confirmed Tatkal tickets in most cases.
| Tatkal Ticket Status | Cancellation Policy | Refund |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed Tatkal Ticket | Cancelled anytime | No Refund |
| RAC Tatkal Ticket | Cancelled before departure | Partial (Fare only, no Tatkal premium) |
| Waitlisted Tatkal (not confirmed) | Auto-cancelled after chart | Full Refund incl. Tatkal charges |
| Tatkal (train cancelled by Railways) | Train cancelled by IR | Full Refund |
Tatkal Refund Exception
The only scenario where you get a full refund on a confirmed Tatkal ticket is if the train is cancelled, the train is late by more than 3 hours, or there is a change in accommodation class by Railways.
4 Ticket Cancellation After Chart Preparation
Chart preparation is a critical threshold. Once the chart is prepared (generally 4 hours before departure for most trains), the online cancellation window closes on IRCTC.
TDR — Ticket Deposit Receipt
If you couldn't board the train due to genuine reasons (illness, missed train, etc.) or if you want a refund after chart preparation, you can file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) on IRCTC within the allowed time frame. Refund is processed after Railways verification — this can take 60–90 days.
5 Online vs Counter Ticket Cancellation
| Feature | Online (IRCTC) | Counter (PRS/UTS) |
|---|---|---|
| Available until | Up to chart preparation | Up to 30 min before departure |
| Cancellation charges | Same as per Railway rules | Same as per Railway rules |
| Refund mode | Back to payment source (3–7 days) | Cash refund at counter |
| TDR filing | Online via IRCTC | At station manually |
| After chart preparation | ❌ Not allowed | ✅ Allowed (with conditions) |
| Service charge refund | IRCTC charges refunded | N/A |
🔑 Key Refund Rules Summary
- Cancellation charges are deducted from basic fare only, not from reservation/super-fast charges.
- For e-tickets booked on IRCTC, cancel online before chart prep for quickest refund.
- Refund of IRCTC convenience fee is non-refundable in most cases.
- For partial party cancellations, only the cancelled passengers' fare is refunded.
- If train is late by 3+ hours and you don't travel, file TDR for full refund.
- No refund if you don't cancel and don't board — except through TDR with valid reason.
