What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax system, introduced on 1 July 2017. It replaced a complex web of central and state taxes — VAT, service tax, excise duty, and more — with a single, destination-based tax collected at every point of value addition.

GST applies to the supply of all goods and services across India, making it one of the biggest tax reforms in the country's history. The tax is governed by the GST Council and administered jointly by the Central and State Governments.

Frequently Asked Questions

GST Exclusive means the listed price does not include GST — the tax is added on top (e.g., ₹1,000 + 18% = ₹1,180). GST Inclusive means the price already contains GST — you use reverse calculation to find the original price (e.g., ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000).
Use the formula: Original Price = Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + GST Rate / 100). For example, if you paid ₹1,180 and GST is 18%: Original = 1180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000. Switch the calculator to "Remove GST" tab for an automatic calculation.
Most restaurants charge 5% GST (without Input Tax Credit). AC restaurants and those in starred hotels may charge 18% GST. Hotel restaurants where room tariff exceeds ₹7,500 per night apply the 18% slab. Always check your bill or ask the establishment.
Yes. GST is a nationwide unified tax, so the same rate applies regardless of which state the transaction occurs in. However, the revenue is split between the Central Government (CGST) and the respective State Government (SGST), each at half the total rate. For inter-state transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate.
Absolutely! While the four standard slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) are pre-set for convenience, you can enter any custom percentage (e.g., 3%, 0.25%, 1.5%) in the "Custom rate" field. This is especially useful for cess, composition levy, or non-standard rates.
