Tissues in Action — Expected Question Paper

Class IX · Science · Biology · Competency-Based (NEP 2020 / NCF 2023 pattern)
Name Class / SecIX / ____
Roll No. Date
Instructions: Section A contains 5 card-based (case study) questions; each card carries 3 sub-questions of 1 mark each. Section B contains one-mark objective/very-short-answer questions. All questions are compulsory. Diagrams, wherever asked, should be neatly labelled.
Section A — Card-Based Questions 15 Marks (5 × 3)
Card 1 — The Growing Tree3 × 1 Mark
A gardener plants a small sapling. Over five years, she observes that the plant grows noticeably taller each season, and its stem also becomes visibly thicker and stronger.
  1. Name the tissue responsible for the increase in the height of the plant.
  2. Name the tissue responsible for the increase in the girth (thickness) of the stem.
  3. State one feature that is common to both these tissues.
Card 2 — Under the Microscope3 × 1 Mark
A student places a thin peel of onion on a slide and observes living, loosely packed cells with thin walls. On another slide, she places a slice of cork and observes dead cells with thick, hardened walls arranged compactly with no intercellular spaces.
  1. Identify the simple permanent tissue seen in the onion peel.
  2. Identify the simple permanent tissue seen in the cork slice.
  3. Name the chemical substance that makes the walls of the cork cells hard and impermeable.
Card 3 — Transport in Plants3 × 1 Mark
During a field trip, students observe that a tall coconut tree is able to carry water from its roots all the way to its topmost leaves, while the food prepared in its leaves is carried down to the roots.
  1. Name the complex tissue that transports water and minerals upward.
  2. Name the complex tissue that transports food from leaves to other parts.
  3. Name one conducting element found in the tissue responsible for water transport.
Card 4 — The Sprinter3 × 1 Mark
A 100 m sprinter consciously moves her leg muscles to run, while her heart keeps beating and her food keeps moving through her intestine, all without her conscious effort.
  1. Name the type of muscular tissue that helps the sprinter move her legs voluntarily.
  2. Name the type of muscular tissue found in the walls of the intestine.
  3. State whether cardiac muscle is voluntary or involuntary in action.
Card 5 — A Cut on the Finger3 × 1 Mark
While cutting vegetables, a student accidentally cuts her finger. Blood oozes out and, after some time, a clot forms and the bleeding stops. The skeleton beneath her skin continues to support her body throughout.
  1. Name the fluid connective tissue that flows out from the cut.
  2. Name the blood cells mainly responsible for clot formation.
  3. Name the hard connective tissue that forms the skeleton.
Section B — One-Mark Questions 15 Marks
  1. Define the term "tissue".
  2. Name the two main types of plant tissue based on the ability to divide.
  3. What is meant by meristematic tissue?
    (a) Growing tissue(b) Dead tissue(c) Conducting tissue(d) Supportive tissue
  4. Name the meristem present at the tips of roots and shoots.
  5. Name the meristem responsible for increase in girth of the stem.
  6. What is intercalary meristem, and where is it found?
  7. Name the simple permanent tissue that provides flexibility to plant parts like the stems of young leaves.
  8. Which simple permanent tissue provides mechanical strength to plants and is made of dead cells?
    (a) Parenchyma(b) Collenchyma(c) Sclerenchyma(d) Xylem
  9. Name the two conducting components of xylem tissue.
  10. Name the living conducting cells of phloem tissue.
  11. What is the function of companion cells in phloem?
  12. Name the tissue that covers the outer surface of the body and lines internal cavities.
  13. Which type of epithelial tissue lines the alveoli of the lungs, allowing easy diffusion of gases?
    (a) Columnar(b) Cuboidal(c) Squamous(d) Glandular
  14. Name the epithelial tissue found in sweat glands and salivary glands.
  15. Which connective tissue fills the space between organs and gives support?
  16. Name the connective tissue that stores fat in the body.
  17. What is the matrix of bone made of?
  18. Name the connective tissue that joins bone to bone.
  19. Name the connective tissue that joins muscle to bone.
  20. What is the basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system called?
