🧠 Introduction

Begin the lesson by asking students: “What is wit? Is it the same as intelligence?” Lead a short discussion. Explain that wit means cleverness with presence of mind. Introduce the story — a farmer uses wit to win the king’s heart in a tricky situation.

📚 Textual Grammar

1️⃣ Tenses

Sentence: “The king sat on his throne.” → Simple Past
Convert to present: “The king sits on his throne.”

2️⃣ Parts of Speech

Sentence: “The farmer bowed low.”

  • farmer – Noun
  • bowed – Verb
  • low – Adverb

3️⃣ Reported Speech

Direct: The guard said, “A farmer wants to see the king.”
Indirect: The guard said that a farmer wanted to see the king.

4️⃣ Voice

Active: The king rewarded the farmer for his wit.
Passive: The farmer was rewarded by the king for his wit.

5️⃣ Clauses

Main: The king smiled
Subordinate: because the farmer answered cleverly.

A. Extract-based Grammar

Read the extract:
“The court was crowded that morning. The king sat on his throne, surrounded by ministers and courtiers.”

  1. Identify the tense used. Simple Past
  2. Pick out one prepositional phrase. on his throne
  3. Frame a question for the underlined part: “The king sat on his throne.” → Where did the king sit?

B. Fill in the blanks with suitable words:

C. Rewrite in Indirect Speech:
